William Secord Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition and sale of nineteenth century dog paintings. Timed to coincide with the 133rd annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City, this comprehensive exhibition will present the masters of Victorian canine portraiture.
Over twenty five nineteenth century paintings will be on view, chosen to represent the range and diversity of nineteenth century animal artists, but also to showcase the many breeds characteristic of England, America and Europe; whether it be the highly bred lap dogs of Paris or the sporting dogs of the Scottish Moors. Among those included will be Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Cairn Terriers, Cocker Spaniel, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, English Setters, Flat-Coated Retriever, Hounds, Jack Russell Terriers, Pointers, Poodles, Saint Bernards, and West Highland White Terriers.
A highlight of the exhibition will be “Pointers in the Field,” by the American artist Gustav Muss-Arnolt (1858-1927). British works include “On Guard, 1889” by Arthur Wardle (1864-1949) which depicts a Bulldog guarding a doorstep from a flock of geese. Also included is a selection of paintings by George Armfield (English, 1808-1893), the highlight of which is the “King Charles Spaniels with Terriers in a Parkland Landscape,” 1860, of monumental proportions. Louis Contoit (19th century), Johannes Deiker (1822-1895), William Davis (1783-1864), Lucy Dawson (d.1954), John Emms (1843 - 1912), Maud Earl (English, 1863-1943), Thomas Earl (fl. 1836-1855), Edmond Van Der Meulen (1841-1905) and Edmund Osthaus (1853-1928) are also represented by oil paintings of a variety of breeds. |
